Most visitors to a British medieval cathedral are conditioned to look up, towards the heavens. We are taught to admire the soaring heights of stone vaulting and the luminous narratives of stained glass (Binski, 2024). Although, in our haste to reach the heavens, we often overlook the most durable and deliberate script of the medieval interior, the floor. As the abbot Bernard of Clairvaux famously queried in the twelfth century, “Why do you decorate what is soon to be disfigured? Frequently people spit on the countenance of an angel. Often the face of one of the saints is pounded by the heels of those passing by” (Brett, 2019).

The answer to Bernard’s protest lies in the realisation that medieval pavements were never intended to be passive decoration. They were active liturgical systems, sophisticated navigational tools that choreographed the movement of the human body through sacred space.

This exploration of the medieval cathedral is the second chapter of a research trajectory funded by the Tiles and Architectural Ceramics Society (TACS). I am profoundly grateful for their support, which has allowed me to treat the floors of Winchester and Malvern not as dead stones, but as active participants in a thousand-year-old dialogue of design. The Floor as an Active Liturgical System

The medieval pavement functioned as a kinetic script, where the layout of ceramic and stone provided a primary navigational tool for the monastic community and the pilgrim alike (Brett, 2019).

In her analysis of English monastic pavements, Karen Brett (2019) argues that these surfaces were intended to be read in multiple ways, adapting as the rituals performed upon them changed over generations. At Winchester Cathedral, the thirteenth-century Retrochoir was specifically designed as a place in transit, functioning as an open perambulatory around the High Altar and the shrine of St. Swithun (Riem, 2023). This spatial logic is reflected in the material record: the orientation of the tile panels changes from east-west in the central vessel to north-south in the aisles, effectively scripting the movement of the pilgrim toward the Holy Hole and the eastern chapels (Robinson, 2023).

This was spatial governance, by utilising the floor as a series of signposts, the church could direct large groups toward specific devotional stations without the need for modern signage (Walker-Watts, 2023). At Great Malvern Priory, the architecture of the ambulatory and south chapel is similarly dictated by the liturgical rites that occurred within them, demonstrating that the floor was the stage upon which the choreography of the liturgy was enacted (Great Malvern Priory Plan, 2014). Consequently, when we view a pavement as a script rather than a carpet, we begin to understand how the medieval church managed the physical confluence of sacred and secular bodies.

Hierarchies of Space and the Sensory Threshold

The arrangement of the pavement was used to demarcate sacred boundaries and establish a hierarchy of spaces that informed the visitor’s sensory experience (Riem, 2023). The entry into the Retrochoir at Winchester is marked by the pilgrim steps, a physical transition into the courts of the Lord (Riem, 2023; Crook, 2010).

At this threshold, the floor originally “glowed with red and gold,” signalling to the pilgrim that they had moved from the civic nave into a space representing the New Jerusalem (Riem, 2023; Winchester Cathedral, 1914). Christopher Norton (1993) identifies that the Retrochoir pavement constitutes the largest surviving carpet of thirteenth-century tiles in England, highlighting its role as the most significant decorated vessel in the cathedral’s east end.

The density and complexity of these designs served to slow the observer down, encouraging a rapt meditation appropriate for the approach to a holy relic (Huysmans, 1898; Harward and Odgers, 2023). Although, this concentration of significance has created a modern tipping point of risk. Areas where the tiles were most elaborate often coincided with the heaviest visitor routes, leading to the catastrophic shattering and loss of glaze observed today (Harward and Odgers, 2023). Understanding this hierarchy allows us to recognise that every dished or shattered tile is essentially a broken word in a sacred sentence.

Performative Trampling

The act of walking over a decorated pavement was in itself a performative ritual, often used to symbolise pious humility or the triumph of salvation (Brett, 2019). Bernard of Clairvaux’s protests against pounding the faces of saints with the heels of passers-by reveals that medieval observers were acutely aware of the material sincerity of what they were stepping on (Brett, 2019). Brett (2019) suggests that placing heraldic badges (such as the Arms of England tiles at Winchester) directly on the floor could be interpreted as a show of pious humility by royal patrons, brought down to earth by the feet of the faithful. Furthermore, certain images invited a deliberate treading on to symbolise the trampling of evil, such as the representations of dragons or demons often found in late medieval schemes (Brett, 2019).

This kinetic interaction creates a situated knowledge, an understanding of the building that can only be gained through physical movement. The floor was a hard-wearing surface meant to last for centuries, but its meaning was renegotiated every time a pilgrim crawled toward a feretory platform (Brett, 2019; Riem, 2023). This patina of time we see today is the physical record of this long-term liturgical performance (Durbin, 2005). Therefore, the floor acts as a vital bridge between the grass-covered ruins of our archaeological past and the vibrant, kinetic experience of the medieval interior (Durbin, 2005).

Conclusion

The pavements of Winchester Cathedral and Great Malvern Priory are the enduring scripts of a civilisation that navigated the sacred with its feet as much as its heart. By unpicking the structural phasing of these floors, we are able to reveal how the medieval church used material culture to choreograph a journey from the earthly to the divine.

This research, facilitated by the TACS Research Grant, continues to document these navigational scripts across multiple sites, with Winchester serving as our first and most profound case study. The transition from the theoretical history to the haptic reality of the demonstration (where we witnessed the frame being taken apart to expose its internal pulleys and rattling weights) offered a rare insight into the sophisticated engineering that defines our built heritage. This article examines the technical and social intelligence embedded in these structures, identifying how encounter like these allows you to read the continuous historic record residing in the materials themselves.

The Material Legacy of Morley House: Brick Making and Industrial Identity

The architectural significance of the People’s Hall, Nottingham, UK, facade is inextricably linked to the unique industrial history of its founder and the specific vernacular materials utilised in its 1750 construction. Originally commissioned as Morley House, the building was constructed for Ann Morley, a widow who maintained her family’s prominence through the physically demanding industry of brick making (Edgar, 2018). The Heritage Statement (2018) identifies the structure as one of the best-preserved 18th-century townhouses in Nottingham, constructed during a period when the town’s medieval timber and plaster buildings were being systematically replaced by masonry (Pete Smith, 2005, cited in Edgar, 2018). The bricks used in the facade were likely fired at Morley’s own works, making the very fabric of the hall a tangible record of her industrial success and the hard labour associated with the trade.

The mid-18th-century masonry serves as a record of the people who extracted the clay from local mills, seasoned it through frost, and fired it in clamps. This material sincerity provides a grounding context for the building’s status as a Grade II* listed asset. The facade also documents a technological evolution; while the primary structure is Georgian, the existing windows are largely Victorian sashes that feature horns, a structural modification introduced after 1832 to provide the lateral strength necessary to support the increasingly heavy panes of glass favoured in the 19th century. Consequently, the facade functions as a living industrial record, where the history of gendered labour and material transition is etched into the brick and timber, necessitating a repair strategy that respects these layers of significance.

This exploration is informed by a recent lecture series I am attending, specifically a session delivered by Jim Sallis regarding "Heritage Impact Assessments and Understanding Significance". Sallis (2026) emphasises that the foundation of any Conservation Management Plan (CMP) is an accurate record of the site and its condition. Without this precise documentation, we risk losing the cultural heritage value of spaces that, while visually stark, provide a vital physical record of 20th-century defensive thinking. By treating the pillbox as a significant architectural object, we can apply a rigorous framework to understand why these "shared resources" must be sustained for future generations (Historic England, 2008).

The Development and Proliferation of the Defensive Blockhouse

A Pillbox is defined as a small, fortified structure or "blockhouse," typically constructed from concrete and strategically camouflaged to conceal its occupants from enemy surveillance (Historic England, 2023). The term, which first appeared in print on the front page of The Times on August 2, 1917, refers to the distinctive geometries (often round, square, or hexagonal) that mirrored the shapes of early 20th-century medicine containers (Historic England, 2023).

While the architectural concept originated with the German army on the Western Front during the First World War, it was rapidly adopted for English coastal defence as the threat of invasion increased in regions such as the Humber Estuary and the coast of Norfolk (Historic England, 2023). Early survivors, such as the 1917 Grade II listed structure at Auburn Farm, East Yorkshire, demonstrate the pioneering use of Western Front engineering, specifically reinforced concrete, to withstand repeated gunfire (Historic England, 2023).

The most significant proliferation of these structures occurred during the Second World War. Following the evacuation of Allied troops from Dunkirk in May 1940, the English coastline was viewed as highly vulnerable, leading to an urgent fortification effort (Historic England, 2023). In June 1940, General Paget, Chief of Staff to the Commander-in-Chief Home Forces, submitted a national anti-invasion plan to the War Cabinet stressing the importance of these defenses (Historic England, 2023). This strategy established a network of approximately 28,000 “stops and strong-points” across beaches and strategic inland locations, such as canals and hills, designed to prevent the enemy from “running riot and tearing the guts out of the country” (Historic England, 2023).

Although construction ceased by 1943 as the threat of invasion subsided, only about 25% of these wartime blockhouses remain in the landscape today, standing as fragmented physical records of a past national crisis (Historic England, 2023).

The Assessment of Significance

The primary challenge in conserving coastal pillboxes is the ease with which their cultural heritage value can be overlooked or lost when they are not viewed within a structured heritage framework that recognises their evidential and historical significance.

According to the criteria set out in BS 7913:2013, heritage value is generally assessed through aesthetic, communal, evidential, and historical lenses (Sallis, 2026). The pillbox at Auburn Farm, East Yorkshire (1917), serves as a primary example; it is considered one of the earliest of its kind in England, utilising reinforced concrete techniques developed on the Western Front in 1916 (Historic England, 2023).

“BS 7913:2013 is the British Standard guide for the conservation of historic buildings and heritage structures. It provides essential, best-practice principles for inspecting, maintaining, and altering historic buildings, offering guidance on managing heritage significance, repairing defects like dampness, and navigating conservation, particularly for those working on traditional or protected structures.”

In the context of Sallis’s lecture, understanding significance is vital as a result it determines how we manage change. For a structure like the Auburn Farm pillbox, its significance is derived from its rarity and its adaptation, having been reused during the Second World War with new gun holes to improve firing points (Historic England, 2023). When we fail to document these sites, we lose the precise documentation required to maintain authenticity (Sallis, 2026). Once this physical fabric is lost (as seen at Skipsea and Happisburgh, where structures have fallen onto the beach due to coastal erosion) the memory of the past it facilitates is lost forever (Historic England, 2023).

The Geometry of Concealment

The architectural form of the pillbox is a literal manifestation of its defensive purpose, designed to blend into the landscape while providing maximum fields of fire. The term "pillbox" itself was popularised because their compact, geometric designs were often compared to early 20th-century medicine containers (Historic England, 2023). While many followed standard concrete designs, others, like the Grade II listed structure at Bleak Hey Nook, utilised a dry stone wall exterior and turf-covered roof to look like a "typical agricultural vernacular building" (Historic England, 2023). This camouflage was essential to hide occupants from enemy view while they utilised "loopholes" (small slits in the wall) to discharge firearms (Historic England, 2023).

The design of these structures represents a "non-contact" relationship with the landscape, where the building must observe without being observed. At Bicester Aerodrome, the octagonal design formed part of a series of fixed defensive points protecting the inner core of the air base (Historic England, 2023). The group value of these structures (the way in which they are arranged as mutually supporting strong points) is of particular interest as an illustration of defensive thinking (Historic England, 2023). The architecture is not about traditional beauty, but rather about a spatial script of surveillance and resistance.

Material Integrity in the Anti-Invasion Blockhouse

The architectural integrity of the pillbox is a direct result of its defensive requirements, where shape, form, and materiality were fused to create a ‘shell-proof’ enclosure capable of withstanding modern ordnance.

While commonly associated with a "standard" hexagonal or square concrete design, the form of the pillbox was frequently adapted to suit its specific strategic environment. For instance, the Grade II listed structure at Bleak Hey Nook utilised a dry stone wall exterior and a turf-covered roof to mimic local agricultural vernacular, camouflaging it from enemy view (Historic England, 2023). Conversely, the octagonal designs at Bicester Aerodrome were constructed from brick, concrete, and earth to protect against paratroopers and aerial surveillance (Historic England, 2023). Most structures featured "loopholes" (small horizontal slits) where designed specifically to provide a protected vantage point for discharging firearms while maintaining the structural thickness of the walls (Historic England, 2023).

The evolution of the pillbox's materiality reflects an escalating need for structural resistance. Early First World War examples along the East Riding coast were often "relatively insubstantial" and barely "bullet-proof" (Historic England, 2023). Although, by the Second World War, the necessity of a national "anti-invasion plan" led to the development of "substantial shell-proof" blockhouses (Historic England, 2023). These structures functioned as part of a wider network of "stops and strong-points" intended to prevent enemy forces from "running riot" across the interior landscape (Historic England, 2023). The use of in-situ poured concrete and steel reinforcement was not merely a construction choice but a strategic imperative; at Auburn Farm, the wall and roof thickness were specifically engineered to resist repeated exposure to gunfire (Historic England, 2023).

Conclusively, the material integrity of the blockhouse is found in this synergy between form and purpose. Whether using a concrete raft floor to prevent sinking in shifting sands or utilising nails for camouflage netting, the pillbox remains a physical testament to a moment when architecture was reduced to the essential logic of survival (Historic England, 2023).

The Inhabitant’s Experience

From an architectural and human perspective, the interior of a pillbox represents an extreme state of physical and psychological disjunction, defined by sensory deprivation and prolonged discomfort. Depending on the specific design, such as the hexagonal Type 22 or the larger Type 24, these blockhouses were intended to be occupied by squads ranging from one to ten men (Historic England, 2023). Within these concrete shells, occupants were subjected to very cramped conditions and low ceilings while observing the external landscape through rectangular loopholes (Historic England, 2023).

Beyond the archival evidence, the reality of inhabiting these spaces was defined by a harsh environment that was perpetually cold, damp, and dark (Historic England, 2023). Concrete is a thermal mass that holds moisture, the walls would often sweat, creating a humid, chilling atmosphere that offered no respite from the coastal elements. This environment often led to a “bunker mentality", a psychological struggle where the individual feels simultaneously protected by feet of reinforced concrete and yet dangerously trapped. The spatial experience is one of total restriction; with the only connection to the outside world is a sliver of light from the loophole, turning the landscape into a filtered, two-dimensional image. This non-coincidence between the rigid geometry and the human need for light and movement creates an intense psychological strain, where the smell of damp air and the sound of the sea are amplified within the echoing chamber.

This intense sensory reality is a critical part of the structure’s communal and historical value, providing a powerful and tangible connection to the lived experience of the 1940s anti-invasion plan (Historic England, 2023).

Conclusion | The CMP as an Ethical Document

The pillboxes of the English Coastline represent a unique architectural disjunction where the rationalised geometry of defence meets the visceral reality of physical confinement. As discussed in Sallis’s lecture, these structures are significant precisely because they are a shared resource that allows us to participate in sustaining our collective historical environment. Far from being static relics, their materiality stands as a sincere record of a period when architecture was reduced to the essential requirements of survival. Whether taking the form of a hexagonal blockhouse at Tolman Point or a stone-clad vernacular imitation at Bleak Hey Nook, these original forms illustrate the sophisticated development of reinforced concrete for infantry defence.

The Chapel of Reconciliation in Berlin, designed by Reitermann & Sassenroth and completed in 2000, is a project where architectural practice, material memory, and sacred space intersect. Constructed using rammed earth that incorporates the remains of its demolished predecessor, the chapel is both a contemporary structure as much as it is historical artefact. This essay reflects on its spatial quietude, sustainable materiality, and the layered symbolism that allows the site to operate as both a memorial and a liturgical environment in post-reunification Berlin.

Main Body

On an unplanned walk tracing the former course of the Berlin Wall, we found the Chapel of Reconciliation entirely by chance. Nestled within the Berlin Wall Memorial precinct, this earthen structure stands quietly amidst the capital's historic noise. Designed by Reitermann & Sassenroth Architekten and completed in 2000, the building is a rare example of a sacred space constructed using rammed earth within a major European city (Raunch, 2001). Although beyond its existance, the chapel also occupies materially as an embedded testimony to trauma, healing, and spatial resurrection.

The original Church of Reconciliation, completed in 1894, stood on Bernauer Strasse but became inaccessible after the Berlin Wall's construction in 1961. Located within the "death strip," the building was ultimately demolished by the East German government in 1985 (Raunch, 2001). According to the official GDR statement, its destruction aimed to "increase the security, order and cleanliness on the state border with West Berlin" (Raunch, 2001). In stark contrast, the decision to build a new chapel on the same site following German reunification marked a clear turn toward memory preservation rather than historical erasure (Raunch, 2001). While much of Berlin’s divided past was actively removed in the post-Wall years, the Reconciliation Parish sought to materially and spiritually anchor the memory of division (Raunch, 2001). The Parish preserved the site’s architectural lineage while simultaneously responding to contemporary needs. The project becomes an active architectural archive. It forms a continued resistance of amnesia that can occur in modernisation by embedding remnants of its predecessor directly into its structural form.

The materiality of the building performs the reconciliation it signifies. The chapel's inner oval is constructed using rammed earth, a technique that had not been used for a public building in Germany for over 150 years (Raunch, 2001). The builders compressed 30 cm of moist clay to 8 cm layers, incorporating stone and glass fragments sourced from the rubble of the demolished 1894 church (Raunch, 2001).

This decision to utilised the original building's detritus within the walls of the new chapel is far more than a sustainable construction method (Raunch, 2001). It symbolically collapses historical time into contemporary space. The past is physically embedded, creating an affective and tactile link between historical violence and present-day reconciliation. Clay materiality allowed the building to perform the slow, stratified work of memory. Its porous texture evokes both vulnerability and endurance. This material logic reinforces the building’s conceptual role, to hold space for grief, and to construct a future rooted in acknowledgment rather than erasure.

The chapel operates simultaneously as a liturgical space and a site of political remembrance.Biographical devotions are held Tuesday through Friday at noon to honour the 138 individuals who died attempting to cross the Berlin Wall (VisitBerlin, 2024). Each Saturday concludes with the Coventry Litany of Reconciliation, a prayer practice tied to global efforts for peace and healing (VisitBerlin, 2024). The building also forms part of the international Cross of Nails Community (VisitBerlin, 2024).

In placing human narratives at the centre of liturgical practice, the chapel functions as both civic and sacred infrastructure. Its spiritual programming is not abstract, but instead tethered to named victims, specific stories, and contemporary geopolitical borders, including the current frontiers of the European Union. The act of remembrance here is therefore dynamic, iterative, and ritualised, using space as a catalyst for reflection and moral accountability.

Despite its historical weight, the architecture remains understated, non-monumental, and accessible. Architecturally, the building comprises two ovals as previously described, an outer timber colonnade and an inner earthen sanctuary. The forms are modest, human-scaled, and oriented along the traditional east-west axis of churches (Raunch, 2001). The clay altar retains the sandstone base of the original 1894 altar, and the damaged altarpiece depicting the Last Supper hangs in the same location as before (VisitBerlin, 2024).

These subtle gestures imbue the building with a quiet dignity. The use of natural, unadorned materials eschews the monumental bravado often associated with post-conflict memorials. Instead, the architecture invites intimacy and reflection. The surrounding rye field, planted as a sign of renewal, further destabilises any attempt to turn the site into static heritage. The result is a building that privileges presence over spectacle, and has reconciliation between past and present, but also between material and meaning, form and memory.

Conclusion

The Chapel of Reconciliation demonstrates how architecture can act as both witness and healer. Its formal restraint, material intelligence, and historical sensitivity converge to produce a space where trauma is neither suppressed nor aestheticised, but held in gentle tension. Found unexpectedly along the path of a lost wall, it serves as a poignant reminder that reconciliation begins not in forgetting, but in remembering, tangibly, spatially, and collectively.

Abstract

Located just off the Champs-Élysées, Vittorio Mazzucconi’s 22 Avenue Matignon offers a study in architectural continuity, material integration, and contextual sensitivity. This essay analyses the building's enduring relevance through its crafted use of stone, glass, and aluminium, and its original response to programmatic and urban constraints. Despite interior alterations over time, the project maintains architectural coherence, demonstrating how thoughtful material strategy and spatial foresight can produce adaptable, long-lived urban architecture.

Main Body

22 Avenue Matignon is a building with sustained architectural significance, demonstrating how contextual integration and material craft can enable long-term spatial relevance within a historic urban fabric. Located a few metres from the Champs-Élysées in Paris’s 8th arrondissement, the building was commissioned by the advertising firm J.W. Thompson and completed in the early 1980s (Fondazione Vittorio Mazzucconi, 2025).
